What makes a good Wedding DJ?

With the advance in technology and prices of equipment coming down, it has never been easier to become a DJ. In other words, anyone can buy equipment, get software that will take care of the mixing and then call themselves a DJ and start taking bookings.

So you may wonder where the skill comes in? Well for me there are a range of skills that a professional DJ should have, especially one that is going to perform at Weddings. Firstly they should be comfortable with a wide range of music, being up to date on the top 40 and having a large collection of dance music is great for certain events or for later on at a Wedding, but it isn't going to get the older folks up. A Wedding DJ should be confident playing everything from 60s to present day and everything in between including soul, motown, disco, cheese etc to ensure that they get everyone dancing. In addition to having the right music, a good DJ should know how to structure the evening so that night builds up smoothly and the crowd doesn't peak too early, leaving a dead dance floor towards the end. A confident microphone technique is essential, a good DJ should be happy to make announcements, introduce speeches and be capable of hosting the event. In my experience, people do not want a DJ that talks endlessly and makes bad jokes throughout the evening, they are looking for someone that is professional, confident and clear.

As Weddings are unique events, a good DJ should have a good understanding of the Bride and Groom, the people attending and how the day is going to run. This is where a pre-event meeting is essential to the success of a Wedding Disco, it is an opportunity for the DJ to ask lots of questions to allow preparation for the day. This will ensure that the music played fits the event and that the DJ doesn't play music that the couple dislike. Some people love cheese and party classics, others want more of a contemporary feel to the music. The DJ should be aware of any no play songs and also any must have songs in advance, allowing time to purchase any songs that the DJ doesn't currently have. The meeting will also help create rapport with the Bride and Groom which will put them at ease on the day.

The DJ should have made contact with the venue if it is not known to find out logistics around parking, unloading, setting up, whether there is a sound limiter etc. On the day, the DJ should be interacting with the guests and if also acting as Master of Ceremonies, ensuring that everything runs smoothly and that guests are guided around the venue at the right times. Having a positive, friendly and professional attitude goes without saying.

Being a good Wedding DJ is about so much more than the music, it is about taking care of the little things through meticulous preparation, allowing you to relax and enjoy the day.

When choosing a DJ for your wedding, make sure that they have the right experience, attitude and confidence to enhance your day, not just turn up and play a few tunes - anyone can do that :-)
